Blanket Stitch

A simple and decorative stitch for the edge of your work

  1. Insert your needle through the back of your work towards the front then loop it around the edge of the work and insert it a second time (through the back again) into the same hole. Pull your yarn tight – this will create your anchor stitch where you begin your blanket stitch
  2. Push your needle horizontally through the anchor stitch and pull your yarn through
  3. Insert your needle, now from front to back about 1cm away from your anchor stitch and 1cm in from the edge of your work. Making sure that your working yarn is sitting in a loop behind your needle – so it’s as though you’re pulling your needle through the middle of your working yarn – as you pull it taught, this catches the loop of yarn and creates the blanket stitch detail.
  4. Repeat step 3, progressing across the edge of your work, continuing to move around a cm each stitch (or however wide you want your stitches to sit apart)… insert your needle from the front to the back and catch the loop of working yarn as you pull up.
